Honors Course Overview 2015-2016

“Literature is the question minus the answer”-Roland Barthes

Course Description:
English 12 encourages students to consider multiple and complex points of view on universal themes and global issues.  The curriculum is organized with an overarching theme, Global Perspectives in a Changing World, which includes four thematic units: Searching for Meaning, Joining the Conversation, Challenging Perspectives, and Commencement. With a focus on world literature, both classic and contemporary, students will study texts from different genres and examine ways in which the writers have posed difficult questions and/or offered insight about humanity.
Attendance:  In accordance with the new MCPS Attendance Policy, a student who earns 5 or more unlawful absences may not receive course credit.  The student will receive a warning letter (electronically through Edline or by US post) after 3 unlawful absences.  All students who earn more than 5 unlawful absences will have to appeal for credit restoration to the administration team.  College visits must be arranged and approved in advance by an administrator.
Communication:
My e-mail address is Anne_W_Cullen@mcpsmd.org.  This is the most reliable method of contact, but it is unwise to email the night before something is due.  Please give yourself ample time for any questions you have about an assignment. The phone number for the English Department is (301) 649-2856 and the office is located in Room 141.  If you need to meet with me specifically, the best time is after school, by appointment.

Course Grading:

The grading system means your grade will be determined by how well you meet the objectives for the course.  In keeping with county policy, extra credit assignments are not possible.

Components of Grade:
Summative Assignments     40%  Formative Assignments   50 %     Practice Homework:    10%
*Summer Reading is in the formative category and cannot be reassessed.

Reteaching/Reassessment: MCPS’s reteaching and reassessment procedures will be followed.

Can all work be reassessed?
·       Not all work is eligible for reassessment; you will be informed which assignments are reassessible at the time the assignment is given.   Reading quizzes are not reassessible.
·       If an assignment is reassessed, the reassessment grade replaces the original grade.

*ANY PLAGIARIZED MATERIAL WILL BE SCORED AS A ZERO.  YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO REASSESS ANY ASSIGNMENT THAT HAS BEEN PLAGIARIZED.

To be eligible for reassessment…
·       students must have completed the original task or assessment, in addition to reteaching/relearning activities, as determined by the teacher.
·       students must initiate the process for reteaching and reassessment (outside of class).   You will need to make an appointment with me, by the next scheduled class meeting after an assessment is returned.

Due Dates and Deadlines:

·       All assignments will have due dates.  Due dates are separated from the deadline with limited exceptions.
·       There may be exceptions when the due date and deadline are the same, such as in the case of homework and long term assignments.
·       Assignments are expected to be turned in at the beginning of the class period, unless otherwise announced.
·       All deadlines for work are two school days or the next class period (for a block period) after the due date.
·       Assignments turned in after the due date and within the deadline, will be assessed a 10% late penalty.
·       Work submitted after the deadline will be recorded as a zero.
·       Work due at the end of class will not be accepted the next day or the next class period.
·       Printer problems are not valid excuses for late work.

If you are absent (excused):
·       Since tests and some quizzes are announced well in advance, and you return to school on a test day, you will be responsible for taking the test or quiz on the assigned day.
·       You will be able to make up work according to the number of days you have been absent.  Make-up work for unexcused absences will be subject to penalty.
·       Papers and Projects are still due on the day if you are absent for class, but not absent from school.

Note:  All work needs to be turned in directly to me (not my mailbox or desk).  Not only are hard copies of papers required, you will also need to submit them to www.turnitin.com.  Turnitin.com:  In addition to turning in a hard copy to me, you are required to submit compositions to Turnitin.com.

Materials:

Besides a notebook, a folder, and either blue or black pens, all students must have:
·       Agenda books: Even with Edline, students are encouraged to write all assignments into their Agenda books.  Homework and other assignments are posted and updated on the board all the time.
·       Journal: You must have composition notebook in class every day to be used as a journal.  This journal will be devoted to warm-ups, class notes and our writing workshop.
·       Reading text: Students are required to bring their novels, plays, etc. to class daily.  Thoughtful and meaningful participation is extremely difficult without frequent reference to text.

Violation of Testing Procedures:  Students who violate the testing procedures set by the teacher will lose credit for that test.  In addition, any work that is plagiarized will receive no credit, and the student will be recommended for disciplinary action.

Course Expectations:  Students are expected to:

·       be in their seats by the late bell.

·       be prepared for class each day with all the necessary materials

·       complete all classwork and homework assignments.

·       take responsibility for learning.

·       participate and take risks.

·       respect self and others
